1707 Washington Ave. – Yard of the Month (July 2016)

Sarah Montgomery’s 1929 Craftsman Bungalow, 1707 Washington Ave, has been selected for Fairmount’s Yard of the Month for July 2016. Sarah bought the 1929 home in October 2015. It was previously owned by Ruby D. Porter for much of the 20th century, and by Barbara Herrera-Rodriguez for the past 20 years before being renovated in 2014. An aptly patriotic color scheme distinguishes our July winner, with its L-shaped front porch: the wood siding is painted cadet blue with bright white trim. The porch sports two bunting-style American flags, and a star wreath on the glass front door. Two over-sized wooden rocking chairs complete a seating area next to a silver mailbox.

The new landscaping features a soft lawn of fine fescue grass, while the walkway is flanked by symmetrical flower beds hugging the porch. Scarlet hibiscus bushes provide height at either end of the beds, attracting butterflies and bees to the garden. The remainder is filled by perennial bushes and ground covers with spreading habit, including red and yellow lantana, a lavender-blooming liriope, and mauve and yellow chrysanthemums.

Our thanks, and a gift certificate to C. C.’s Touch of Nature, go to Sarah Montgomery.
